Santa Barbara Sandstone benches are a welcome addition to this landscape!

We recently worked with a major landscape development company in Southern California who selected Santa Barbara Sandstone for natural stone benches. The setting is a corporate office landscape in Irvine California. Monarch Stone International provided both the stone and installation services.

Initially there were two stones considered; a limestone from Texas and Santa Barbara Sandstone. Santa Barbara Sandstone was chosen due to its unique colors, large block size and proximity to Southern California.

Santa Barbara Sandstone is a beautiful stone indigenous to Santa Barbara, Montecito and nearby areas in California. In its natural state, its harvested as boulders then cut to size. It’s famous for its texture and workability. Santa Barbara Sandstone’s natural color ranges include white, buff, yellow, beige, tan, brown, rose and greens.

The natural color range requested was “Buff”. There were some initial challenges with this for two reasons. Color and “activity” in stone can vary – in this case, from boulder to boulder. The ability to find Santa Barbara Sandstone boulders in the buff color range large enough to fabricate into the large block segments was one. To find boulders without variation created yet another challenge. We were prepared to overcome both areas and diligent in our efforts to meet all specifications. The final products were both handsome as well as functional. Comfortable seating areas are a welcomed addition to this inviting landscape!
