Reclaimed, recycled, salvaged cobblestone benefits the environment in multiple ways.

As one of the largest importers of reclaimed antique cobblestone, Monarch Stone International is proud to play a role in supporting a healthier, sustainable environment. Reclaimed cobblestone, such as Historic European Cobbleston, is a product that benefits both the homeowner and environment in several ways.

The American Society of Landscape Architects published an article, Sustainable Residential Design: Using Low-Impact Materials,  which discusses how “integrated site design” can improve water, energy efficiency and reduce waste. It explains that new and non-recyclable materials used in homes and landscapes consume enormous amounts of resources to produce and distribute, and then create additional waste when they are demolished.

Homeowners and the building industry can significantly increase the quality of the environment through the use of innovative low-impact products such as; permeable, recycled, recyclable and non-toxic materials. Historic European Cobblestone, which is reclaimed from streets that no longer can use it, would end up in landfills were it not for its ability to be reclaimed and recycled for use on new roads, residential driveways, walkways or patios. Using these types of recycled materials can minimize consumption of newer materials, enable a continual reuse of limited natural resources, and decrease waste and environmental pollution.

Reclaimed antique Historic European Cobblestone, is a recycled product that finds new life as a beautiful driveway, walkway or patio in todays homes and businesses. Yet, the way this material is installed plays an equally important role as well. Installations using a natural sub-base and natural joints will assist in permeability (storm water run-off) and percolation, such as the driveway in the above photo. This particular client selected a reclaimed antique French cobblestone, a blend of various sizes, which was meticulously installed on a natural base with natural joints by Foxborough Nursery of Street MD. This type of installation also withstands the freeze/thaw cycle, allowing the joints to breathe and expand thus avoiding unsightly cracks in the joints. The benefit continues, as cobblestones set on natural base can be removed (deconstructed) and re-installed in other areas should there be a need to re-design, or even moved to another location entirely.
