Cobblestone Streets in Jersey City, New Jersey are being preserved through the efforts of the Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy.

Monarch Stone International learned that JCLC advocates at both the state and local levels for the preservation of landmarks in Jersey City including the preservation of its six remaining 19th century cobblestone streets: Holland Street, Manning Avenue, the 17th Street Viaduct, High Street, Audrey Zapp Drive, and Provost Street.

A common feature of the streetscape in the 19th century, cobblestone streets are now a rarity in Jersey City, having given way to a sea of asphalt.  JCLC has worked with neighborhood associations, students, artists, churches and the other individuals and organizations that make up the rich tapestry of Jersey City. Throughout all of its work, JCLC believes that preservation is not simply about keeping old buildings standing, but rather incorporating historic resources into the vibrant and dynamic economic and cultural fabric that makes a city great! jersey-city-landmark-conservancy

Monarch Stone International is passionate about stone, especially old cobblestone streets in the USA – which was the springboard for this ongoing topic we call “Cobblestone Streets” series.  You’ll find more posts on several locations throughout the U.S. both here and on our Historic European Cobblestone web site.
