Continuing with our segment on:  Quarried Stone – Plan Before Selecting,  the discussion turns to issues with quarried stone availability.

Stone extracted from quarries, is in a constant state of evolution. Be sure that your stone manager has updated information about the stone and quarry you choose.

Stone blocks extracted from a quarry last year, may not match in ‘activity’ (the veining or movement) with blocks extracted next year.  And even more problematic, popular limestone’s often become extinct within a quarry due to the evolution of its development.  So when you are looking at samples of stone from a sales representative or showroom, discuss current supply and request samples that represent available material in stock, or in the quarry.  Special sizes in tiles and dimension/architectural  stone are particularly sensitive to current quarry production.  Old samples may not be representative of what you are holding in your hands.

The available sizes of blocks being produced will effect specifications.  For example, if a  36” x 36″ paver is desired, but the blocks (slabs) measure 65” x 90”, you will only receive 2 pieces out of each slab resulting in a 50% waste factor and additional cost.  And conversely, if the design calls for larger pieces than available, a redesign may be required or another stone will be necessary.

And a final note, a particular color may only be available from the bottom of a quarry.  If the stone blocks above need to be  extracted first, this will cause delays depending on quantity needed.

A professional stone supplier/manager will pursue answers to availability issues, and in a collaborative effort with the architect, designer, contractor and homeowner,  guide decisions for a successful final specification.
